How to Use the Iron Cross
To use the Iron Cross system, all you have to do is place two simple craps bets: the field bet and a place bet on the five, six, and eight.
Field Bet
The Field Bet is a bet that you can place at any time, and it wins if the dice land on two, three, four, nine, ten, eleven, or twelve. If the dice lands on five, six, seven, or eight, the field bet loses. The field bet always pays out 1:1 unless you win on a two or twelve, which pay 2:1.
Place Bet on Five, Six, and Eight
The second bet you need to make is a place bet on the five, six, and eight. Place bets win if the shooter rolls your number before a seven. The place bet pays out 7:5 if you win on a five, and 7:6 if you win on a six or eight.
Between the field bet and the place bet, you have every number covered except seven. As long as the shooter doesn't roll a seven, you win your bet. Sounds pretty good right? Well, in actuality the system provides you with pretty bad odds. We'll explain now...
Downfall of the Iron Cross System
The issue with the Iron Cross system is that even though you win 80% of the time, you don't win that much per roll, and when you lose, you lose big. It takes quite a few bets to cover all of the numbers except seven, so when the seven does come around, you are going to lose every single bet you made.
Let's look at the possible outcomes while using the Iron Cross:
- The dice show 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12. In this case your field bet wins even money, and your place bet remains on the table. This is the best possible outcome.
- The dice show 5. Your place bet on the 5 wins 7:5, the field bet loses, and your other place bets remain on the table. This is the second best outcome.
- The dice show a 6 or 8. Your place bet on the 6 or 8 wins 7:6, the field bet loses, and your other place bets remain on the table. This is the third best outcome.
- The dice show 7. You lose all bets, and this is obviously the worst outcome.
So what does all this mean? Well, as long as you miss a seven you make money, but you don't make enough money to cover your losses when the seven does hit.
We'll spare you the calculations, but by using the Iron Cross system you give the house a 3.87% advantage. That doesn't sound like much, but it is much higher than the 1.41% house edge that is available on the pass line bet.
That being said, the Iron Cross can be a very fun system to use because you can go on some pretty long winning streaks if the dice roll your way. We recommend using the Iron Cross if you are a casual player looking to have some fun, as opposed to a serious gambler looking to reduce the house edge as far as possible.
